Northern Ireland: often the cheapest personal number plates

By Steven Jackson OBE, Founder, New Reg Limited

Northern Irish number plates are widely available, carry no age identifier and often read as initials, which can make them some of the best-value personal plates.

If you want a personal plate without paying premium money, Northern Irish registrations are worth a serious look. They are one of the most practical formats on the market.

What they are. A Northern Irish plate is made up of three letters, one of which must be an I or a Z, plus up to four numbers, and the letters and numbers can appear in either order. Because they carry no age identifier, they double as cover plates that hide the age of a newer car.

Why they can be a bargain. Northern Irish marks are widely available, and that supply keeps entry prices sensible even though many read neatly as initials. Our data does show they carry the highest average price of the mainstream formats, which reflects genuine demand, but within that there is a deep pool of affordable combinations for buyers who are flexible on the exact letters.

What to look for. The value sits in marks that read as initials or a short name, and in the lower numbers. Because the required I or Z can fall in different positions, it pays to search a few variations of your initials to find the cleanest, cheapest option.
