PrivatePlates.co.uk explained: how its private plate prices work

PrivatePlates.co.uk is the online private plate shop run by New Reg Limited, a business that has dealt in registrations since 1989. It opened to the public on 17 October 2026, and its pricing is the part most worth understanding before you buy a registration mark anywhere.

Every registration on the site has never been assigned to a vehicle. Where the DVLA also offers the same mark, PrivatePlates.co.uk prices it below the DVLA's own published price, currently by £1. Both prices include VAT and the £80 DVLA assignment fee, so the comparison is like for like. The site checked its prices against the DVLA's price list on 16 October 2026 and publishes live examples on its comparison page.

Only two things are compulsory when you buy a private plate: the registration mark itself and the £80 assignment fee, which is already inside the price shown. You can then assign the mark to your vehicle yourself at no further cost. Everything else is optional and priced before you order, as the site's pricing page sets out.

Two extras are offered. For £20 a registration mark, the team checks that the vehicle is eligible, deals with the DVLA and assigns the mark for you. Road-legal number plates made to British Standard BS AU 145e can be added too, sent by Royal Mail Special Delivery with postage included in their price.

Beyond buying, the site lets you score any registration out of 100 and ask the team what a mark is worth, and it takes orders 24 hours a day. The team answers email and live chat from 8:30am to 6pm on weekdays and from 8:30am to 1pm on Saturdays.

For anyone following what private plates really cost, the useful point is that the advertised figure is the whole compulsory cost. A price that leaves out VAT or the assignment fee can look lower than it is, so compare like with like wherever you shop. You can start a search at PrivatePlates.co.uk.
