UK Public Asked to Shape Self-Driving Vehicle Safety Rules

By William Fletcher MBE, Chief Executive Officer, New Reg Limited

The government is seeking public views on draft safety principles for automated vehicles, with responses accepted until 9 September 2026.

The public has until 9 September 2026 to respond to a government consultation on the safety principles that will underpin self-driving vehicles on UK roads. The Department for Transport has published a draft statement setting out the core standards automated vehicles will be expected to meet before they are permitted to operate without a human in direct control.

The consultation is open to anyone with an interest in how self-driving technology should be governed, including motorists, road safety advocates, local authorities and the automotive industry. Officials want to hear whether the proposed principles strike the right balance between enabling innovation and protecting people who use roads alongside automated vehicles.

Automated vehicle legislation has already passed into UK law, but the safety principles being consulted on will form a key part of how that legislation is applied in practice. The Department for Transport says the framework is intended to give clear guidance to vehicle manufacturers and operators about what acceptable safety performance looks like.

For drivers, the shift towards automated vehicles raises practical questions about maintenance, insurance and roadworthiness that will evolve as the technology becomes more common. Keeping a vehicle in good mechanical order remains essential regardless of how much of the driving is handled by software, and resources such as Garage.co.uk can help owners find qualified local mechanics as that transition unfolds.
