The Department for Transport has published research on managing future uncertainty when building and evaluating a national integrated transport digital twin.
The UK government is actively working on how to account for uncertainty when developing an integrated transport digital twin, with the Department for Transport publishing research that sets out approaches for planning, trialling and evaluating such a system across the country's transport network.
A digital twin is a live, data-driven virtual model of a real-world system. In transport terms, that means a connected simulation of roads, rail, public transport and the journeys people make every day. The Department for Transport's research focuses on the challenge that no one can predict the future with certainty, so the models underpinning any digital twin must be built to handle a wide range of possible outcomes rather than assuming a single fixed forecast.
For most drivers, this work sits in the background, but its implications are practical. If transport planners can test policy decisions, infrastructure changes and disruption scenarios inside a digital model before committing public money, the result should be better-informed choices about road improvements, traffic management and the way different modes of transport connect with each other. The research outlines how uncertainty should be built into that process from the start, rather than treated as an afterthought.
