UK Government Consults on Automated Vehicle Safety Rules

By William Fletcher MBE, Chief Executive Officer, New Reg Limited

The Department for Transport has opened a formal consultation on draft safety principles that will govern how self-driving vehicles operate on UK roads.

The Department for Transport has launched a public consultation on a draft statutory statement of safety principles for automated vehicles, marking a significant step in the regulatory framework being built around self-driving technology in the UK.

The move follows an earlier call for evidence, the responses to which the Department for Transport has now analysed. Those findings have informed the draft principles now out for consultation, which are intended to set legally binding safety standards for vehicles capable of driving themselves without human input.

The statement of safety principles matters because it will form part of the foundation on which manufacturers, operators and insurers must build their systems and obligations under the Automated Vehicles Act. Getting those principles right at this stage will shape how automated vehicles are approved and monitored once they reach public roads.

For drivers, fleet operators and garage businesses, the direction of travel is clear: automated vehicles are moving from concept to regulated reality. As the technology edges closer to everyday use, staying informed about how these vehicles work and what they require in terms of servicing and maintenance will become increasingly important. Workshops looking to prepare for that shift can find useful guidance at Garage.co.uk.

The consultation is open to industry bodies, road safety organisations, technology developers and members of the public, all of whom are encouraged to submit their views before the closing date.
