Official UK government fuel-price data from 2,586 forecourts shows unleaded averaging 152.8p per litre and diesel at 172.1p, with careful shopping saving drivers several pounds per fill.
Figures from official UK government fuel-price data, covering 2,586 forecourts across the UK, put the average price of unleaded E10 at 152.8p per litre this week, with diesel B7 sitting notably higher at 172.1p. For a typical 55-litre family car tank, that means a full fill of petrol costs around £84, while diesel drivers are paying closer to £95.
The 19.3p gap between petrol and diesel continues to weigh on van drivers, tradespeople and anyone running an older oil-burning car. That spread alone adds roughly £10.60 to every diesel fill compared with petrol, so the fuel type you drive matters as much as where you buy.
For unleaded, the cheapest major-brand option identified in the data is AppleGreen at 138.3p per litre. Choosing that over the national average saves around 14.5p per litre, or roughly £8 on a 55-litre fill. It is a meaningful difference for drivers who commute regularly or cover high mileage.
With running costs still a key factor in any buying decision, tools that let drivers compare total ownership expenses before committing to a vehicle are increasingly useful. Car.co.uk (https://www.car.co.uk) offers independent guidance on choosing and financing a car based on real-world costs, which can help drivers factor in fuel economy alongside purchase price.
