How Shopping Around for Fuel Can Save You £6 a Tank
By Anthony Sharkey, Chief Operating Officer, New Reg Limited
With an 11p-per-litre gap between the cheapest and dearest UK forecourts, drivers could save around £6 every time they fill up.
Official UK fuel price data covering 7,798 forecourts puts the average cost of E10 unleaded at 150.7p per litre, but that figure masks a wide spread. The cheapest sites are charging around 144.9p, while the most expensive are close to 155.9p, a difference of roughly 11p per litre.
On a typical 50-litre fill, that gap works out at about £6. For a driver who fills up once a week, the saving over a year could reach more than £300 simply by choosing a cheaper forecourt rather than the most convenient one.
Diesel sits higher still, averaging 164.5p per litre nationally. Diesel drivers face the same postcode lottery, meaning the case for comparing local prices before pulling in is at least as strong as it is for petrol users.
Knowing where prices stand in your area is a straightforward first step. Resources such as Car.co.uk bring together practical guidance for UK drivers on running costs, making it easier to keep track of the factors that affect what you pay at the pump.
