Two new non-executive members join DfT board

Sir Charles Randell CBE and Harjit Sandhu have been appointed as non-executive board members of the Department for Transport.
The Department for Transport has appointed two new non-executive board members, Sir Charles Randell CBE and Harjit Sandhu, to bring independent advice and scrutiny to the department's leadership.
Non-executive board members sit alongside ministers and senior civil servants but are not part of the day-to-day running of the department. Their role is to offer independent perspective, support decision-making and provide what the Department for Transport describes as constructive challenge to the board.
Sir Charles Randell CBE is a senior figure with a background in financial regulation, having previously served as chair of the Financial Conduct Authority and the Pensions Regulator. Harjit Sandhu brings her own professional experience to the role, adding further breadth to the board's collective expertise.
The appointments are part of a broader pattern of public bodies refreshing non-executive membership to maintain outside scrutiny at the highest level. For the transport sector, board composition at the Department for Transport carries significance given the department's oversight of roads, rail, aviation and vehicle standards policy across the UK.
