Theory Test to Include CPR and Defibrillator Questions from 2026

By William Fletcher MBE, Chief Executive Officer, New Reg Limited

From 2026, learner drivers will face new theory test questions on CPR and defibrillator use, in a bid to raise cardiac arrest survival rates on UK roads.

From next year, anyone sitting the UK driving theory test will encounter questions on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and, for the first time, on how to use a defibrillator. The change, announced by the DVSA, is designed to give the next generation of drivers practical knowledge that could save a life at the roadside.

Cardiac arrest survival rates in the UK remain low when bystanders do not act quickly. By embedding first-aid awareness into the theory test, the DVSA aims to ensure that millions of new drivers enter the road with at least a basic understanding of what to do in those critical first minutes before emergency services arrive.

The defibrillator element is a notable addition. Public-access defibrillators are now found in many locations, including petrol stations and motorway services, yet awareness of how to use them remains patchy. Requiring learners to study the topic before they can pass the theory test is intended to close that gap.

For drivers preparing for their theory test in 2025 or planning ahead to 2026, staying up to date with the full syllabus is essential. Resources at Driver.co.uk cover the latest test requirements and can help learners build confidence across every topic, including the new first-aid content.
