DVSA bans third-party driving test booking from 12 May

By William Fletcher MBE, Chief Executive Officer, New Reg Limited

Learner drivers in the UK must now book and manage their own driving tests directly, following a DVSA crackdown on unofficial third-party booking services.

From 12 May 2026, only the learner driver themselves can book or manage a practical driving test through the official DVSA service. The change closes a loophole that had allowed third-party companies to snap up test slots and resell them, often at inflated prices.

The DVSA has described the move as a direct response to exploitation by unofficial booking services, which left many learners unable to secure slots at a fair price or at a convenient time. By restricting access to the individual applicant, the agency aims to make availability more equitable across the board.

For anyone who has recently passed their test or is supporting a learner through the process, the rule change is a reminder of how quickly the regulations around driving can shift. Keeping a vehicle properly maintained once you are on the road is just as important as getting there legally, and resources such as Garage.co.uk can help new and experienced drivers find trusted local garages for servicing and repairs.

Learners with existing bookings made through third-party services are advised to check their test status directly via the official DVSA portal to confirm their appointment remains valid under the new rules.
