The Department for Transport has released a practical framework to help transport planners and decision-makers assess the carbon impact of using artificial intelligence, acknowledging that AI itself carries an environmental cost that must be factored into any net benefit calculation.
The tool is aimed at professionals developing transport solutions who need a structured way to balance the energy and emissions associated with running AI systems against the potential carbon savings those systems might deliver. The Department for Transport recognises that AI can help optimise traffic flow, reduce idle time and cut fuel consumption across networks, but that its processing demands also generate greenhouse gas emissions that can be easy to overlook.
For ordinary drivers, the practical consequence is that any AI-driven transport scheme introduced by local authorities or national bodies will increasingly be expected to demonstrate a positive carbon balance before it is approved or funded. That means the tools guiding road management, public transport scheduling or journey planning apps will face greater scrutiny over their own environmental footprint, not just the journeys they influence.
