Thousands more driving tests to be added every month

By William Fletcher MBE, Chief Executive Officer, New Reg Limited

The Transport Secretary has announced measures to release thousands of additional driving test slots each month, aiming to cut the lengthy waits facing learner drivers across the UK.

Learner drivers facing long waits for a practical test are set to benefit from a new package of measures announced by the Transport Secretary, which will make thousands of extra test slots available every month.

The DVSA has been under pressure to address a significant backlog that has built up in recent years, leaving many candidates waiting months beyond their ready date before they can sit their test. The latest action is intended to accelerate the pace at which that backlog is cleared.

The additional availability is expected to come through a combination of operational changes within the DVSA's existing network of test centres, though the precise breakdown of new slots per centre has not yet been published.

For learners looking to make the most of any newly released appointments, being properly prepared before booking is more important than ever. Booking a test before you are ready risks losing your slot and extending your wait further, so structured, professional tuition remains the most reliable route to passing first time.
