STATS19 road collision data may be mapped to UK roads network

The Department for Transport has completed a feasibility study into linking STATS19 collision records directly to a structured road network, a move that could significantly improve how official road casualty data is validated and used.

STATS19 is the recording system that police in Great Britain use to log road accidents involving personal injury. Every record captures details such as location, road type, speed limit and the conditions at the time, but the data is currently held as individual records rather than being tied to a mapped network of roads. The feasibility work looked at whether those records could be reliably matched to a geographic road layer.

The Department for Transport concluded that such matching is feasible in principle, though the study was focused on assessing practicalities rather than delivering a finished system. The core benefit of successful matching would be better validation: linking a recorded collision to a specific road segment allows analysts to cross-check whether the reported road type, speed limit and layout are consistent with what is actually there, catching errors that would otherwise go undetected in the raw data.

For road safety researchers, local authorities and engineers who use casualty statistics to decide where to invest in safety improvements, higher-quality underlying data would mean more reliable analysis and, in turn, better-targeted interventions. The study represents an early but concrete step by official statisticians toward modernising how one of the country's most important transport datasets is managed and quality-assured.
