Skoda releases free 3D-printable accessories for owners to make

By William Fletcher MBE, Chief Executive Officer, New Reg Limited

Skoda has published a range of free 3D-printable designs so owners can produce their own car accessories at home.

Skoda has made a collection of 3D-printable accessory designs available to owners free of charge, allowing drivers to produce physical parts for their cars using a home or local 3D printer rather than buying them from a retailer.

According to multiple reports, the designs have been released through an established online database of printable files and cover practical items including cupholders. The files are free to download, meaning the main cost to the owner is the printing material and the time required to produce each piece.

The move puts a degree of personalisation directly in the hands of owners. Because the designs can be printed at home or through a local print service, drivers are not dependent on waiting for a part to be stocked or shipped, and they can in principle reprint a piece if it wears out or is lost.

Skoda is not the only manufacturer to have explored this approach, but releasing a dedicated range of branded, vehicle-specific files marks a notable step towards normalising DIY fabrication as a legitimate extension of car ownership. Owners who already have access to a 3D printer stand to benefit most immediately, while those without one would need to use a third-party printing service to take advantage of the files.
