Review launched to shape pathway to zero emission driving

By William Fletcher MBE, Chief Executive Officer, New Reg Limited

The government has opened a public consultation on how the UK reaches zero emission driving by 2035, with views accepted until 23 October 2026.

The Department for Transport has launched a formal review into the pathway toward zero emission driving by 2035, opening a public consultation that gives drivers, businesses and industry a direct say in how the transition is shaped.

The review centres on the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate, the policy framework that sets requirements for manufacturers on how quickly their new car and van sales must shift toward electric vehicles. The consultation invites responses from anyone with a view on how that framework should work in practice, including ordinary motorists who are weighing up whether to switch to electric and when.

The deadline for submitting responses is 23 October 2026. The Department for Transport is the official body running the process, and responses can be submitted through the government's consultation channels. Anyone affected by the shift to electric vehicles, whether they own a petrol car today, run a small business, or manage a fleet, is considered a relevant stakeholder whose input is welcome.

For drivers keeping an existing car on the road while they wait to see how the 2035 deadline takes shape, staying on top of servicing and maintenance matters more than ever. Garage.co.uk helps drivers find a trusted independent garage and book it directly for MOTs, servicing and repairs, with no fees or commission charged for doing so.
