Drivers can save over £6 by shopping around for fuel prices

By Anthony Sharkey, Chief Operating Officer, New Reg Limited

Shopping around for fuel could save drivers more than £6 per tank fill-up.

Drivers can potentially save over £6 by comparing fuel prices at different forecourts before filling up their tanks. The average price for E10 unleaded fuel across the UK is currently 154.9p per litre, according to official UK fuel price data. However, prices vary significantly, with some forecourts charging as low as 148.9p per litre, while others reach up to 159.9p. This price difference of approximately 11p per litre can add up quickly on a typical 50-litre tank.

For drivers, filling up at a cheaper forecourt can lead to considerable savings. When you consider that at the lower end of the spectrum, a fill-up might cost around £7.44, while the higher prices could bring that total closer to £7.97, the savings become even clearer. In addition to the lower upfront cost, taking a moment to shop around could ensure drivers aren't overpaying for fuel, which is particularly valuable as fuel prices continue to fluctuate.

It’s important for drivers to be aware of their options. Many people may not realise that a few pence saved per litre can quickly accumulate, especially for those who fill up regularly or rely heavily on their vehicles for commuting. By utilising available resources such as fuel price comparisons, motorists can make informed decisions and choose the most cost-effective options available.

The implications of these price differences also extend to the wider economy, as consumers seeking the best deals contribute to a more competitive market. By encouraging fuel retailers to remain price conscious, drivers can indirectly influence price stability. Therefore, being proactive about fuel shopping not only benefits individual budgets but can also help maintain reasonable fuel prices across the board.
