2028 Volvo XC60 and XC90 claim record plug-in hybrid electric range

Volvo has revealed updated XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids for 2028, each offering more than 70 miles of electric range, which multiple reports describe as the highest figure of any PHEV currently available.
Volvo has launched revised versions of its two best-selling models, the XC60 and XC90, for 2028, with plug-in hybrid powertrains that deliver more than 70 miles of electric-only range, a figure that according to multiple reports surpasses every other PHEV on sale today.
For most drivers, 70-plus miles of electric range means the vast majority of everyday journeys, commutes, school runs and local trips could be completed without the petrol engine ever starting. The combustion motor remains available for longer trips, so owners keep the flexibility of a traditional car while operating much of the time as they would in a fully electric vehicle.
The jump in electric range is described by multiple reports as more than double what the previous XC60 and XC90 PHEVs were capable of, representing a substantial step rather than a modest refresh. Both models sit at the core of Volvo's line-up and have consistently been among the brand's highest-volume sellers, meaning a large number of buyers are likely to be considering one of these two vehicles.
The announcement affects anyone currently shopping for a large, premium SUV with electrified running and strong real-world efficiency. Those who cover predictable daily distances within the electric range could find their fuel costs fall significantly, while still having a combustion engine available when needed. Full pricing and on-sale dates for the UK market had not been confirmed at the time of the announcement.
